Francis Flavin

As the guest lecturer at the DOI Library's Open House, I just wanted to thank the DOI Library for giving me the chance to talk, and to thank the audience for attending. I want to emphasize that the DOI Library has an exceptionally strong of material on the American West, the environment, and American Indian history, policy, and law.

And, for those of you who are interested in the American West, I'd like to call your attention to several things. First, the Potomac Corral is an organization--somewhere between a learned society and a Lions Club--for people with an interest in the American West. The URL is http://www.potomac-corral.org.

Also, there are several good exhibitions opening up this fall in D.C. There is an exhibition on the Indian paintings of George de Forest Brush at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from September 14, 2008 to January 4, 2009.

There is an exhibition on Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams that runs from September 26, 2008 through January 4, 2009, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

And, Tammy Garcia, a leading contemporary Native American artist, has an exhibition at the National Museum for Women in Art in Washington, D.C. The NMWA is located at 1250 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. The exhibition runs from August 22, 2008 - February 3, 2009.

If you enjoyed the Catlin talk, you'll probably enjoy each of these exhibtions!

Check out the Potomac Corral website. It reminded me of Georgia O'Keefe meets John Wayne. I love it when history is made fun. Learning what really happened in the west from a group of historians who know makes this a website you will want to bookmark.
