Join us on an eight month adventure aimed at catapulting the library careers of emerging and aspiring librarians in Maryland and the greater Washington D.C. area into high gear.
Have you ever wondered…
- What career path in library science is right for me and how do I figure that out… quickly?!!!
- Does my current resume profile the knowledge, skills, and experiences I have in a way that would say to a prospective employer… “hire me now!” ?!
- How can I build a network of personal and professional colleagues in the library field that will support me in my transition to the library field?
- Is it possible to get a library job in this competitive and dynamic job market?
- OMG, I’ve been called for an interview! How can I make a strong impression to stand out from the pack as the top candidate?
CAREER MANAGEMENT ALONE NO MORE!
Join us and participate in #MLA DEAL Careers. Help co-create a community where it is possible to connect with the resources, tools, and support necessary to navigate career development and job search processes with greater confidence and skill. With #MLA DEAL Careers, learning and sharing happens in a way that is flexible, self-paced, accommodating for busy schedules, and always accessible.
Who is behind this?
Your friendly Maryland Library Association (MLA) DEAL leadership committee is excited to launch this program. You can e-mail us at DEAL.Maryland@gmail.com with any questions along the way!
Interested but want some more details?
#MLA DEAL Careers is designed to be a social learning (or informal learning) career development program for emerging and aspiring librarians. Access to career resources on a DIY MLA DEAL Career page is easy; engagement in bi-monthly facilitated career development content inspires action; lessons from career development experts and library leaders are available “in their own words”; and conversations with peers and colleagues cultivate a community of shared leads, networks, resources, and tools. Ultimately, it is our hope that through connection and community you can accelerate your transition into a career or internship where your MLS degree makes a difference in a personal and meaningful way. You do not need to be a member of the MLA or DEAL to participate – and it is entirely free!
“Hmmm, maybe… BUT what’s in it for me?”, you might wonder:
With our program, by April 2013 you will have….
- Documented clear and actionable career goals
- Developed and leveraged key elements of your own professional brand to effectively promote your knowledge, skills, and experiences with peers, teachers, and prospective employers in varied environments
- Expanded your professional network in support of your career goals
- Grown your confidence in your ability to successfully engage in each stage of the hiring process by: preparing all the essential promotional tools necessary to secure an interview (think resume and cover letter to start); developing and employing different search strategies to creatively cultivate and share job leads; executing each stage of the interview process with competence; closing the deal effectively to accept the job (or internship) and get started in a career optimizing your MLS degree!
How will this work?
Look for three blog posts a month (currently targeting the second and fourth week of each month on Tuesdays and Thursdays!) that will share information on topics of importance to career development. Tagged as #MLA DEAL Careers. Once a month we’ll hear more on a topic via podcast from local experts and library leaders!
You can be in receive mode, you can actively participate in the monthly challenges, you can work at your own pace pulling from blog content and DIY page resources relevant to where you are, or you can start your own face-to-face discussion groups that work the content together and share lessons learned via our DEAL LinkedIn Group! It is up to you- make it your own!
